As mentioned before here,I’ve always been a great fan of comicbooks and graphic art [like from 3 years old,graduating from 'The Beano' to Superman comics and thence to gay erotic art...] and even these days I seem to prefer artwork to photos when it comes to porn. When I saw the Japanese cartoon film Akira 20 years back I was astonished by the energy,skill and originality of the material. Since then,manga style toons have invaded the west and are a great influence on tv toons,animated movies,computer games, kids comicbooks,graffiti and even serious graphic art novels.

Exploring further into Japanese gay erotic art after discovering the great Gengoroh Tagame I discovered a whole swathe of incredibly talented gay BDSM artists. Some of the stuff,such as ero guro is maybe at the extreme end for western tastes being about eroticism based around torture, mutilation,cruelty,scat and even necrophilia. On the other side of the Japanese graphic art spectrum is Yaoi,which is a genre missing in the west, concerning cartoons of gay male lovers for the erotic enjoyment of straight women,often surprisingly young guys in love appearing as themes.

Hentai are simple porn cartoons ,being available at virtually every bookstall in Japan apparently. In that BDSM toon images seem less frowned on by the authorities than actual photos I guess they allow an open understanding and appreciation of the subject,rather than the hypocrisy in the west that ‘It goes on,but we don’t talk about it’ except in the tabloid newspapers maybe when part of a scandal!

Japanese BDSM porn is often artistic, imaginative,beautiful and clever. The other side of the coin is sometimes a darkness and a viciousness I think I find hard to understand. Some of it I find very horny though,some I definately do not.

Of course we all have our own tastes and interests but I got to say that images of violent death,hanging or nasty degradation are not really to my taste at all. I am tolerant to the extent that I wouldn’t ban these images but even then, I wonder about that sometimes too. The west has its own nasty artwork for sure, and that is why I sometimes feel so ambivalent about sites like Ning Dark Desires. I use it and enjoy parts of it…for ‘guys not afraid of their dark desires’…Some of the art posted I do not like,even in my wildest nightmares I do not see stuff like this…I guess my own dark desires are not all that dark really by comparison with some. But hey,as Dame Edna would say, there are a lot of really ’sick’ people about!

I had a shore dive today  from the Isle of Great Cumbrae,here in Scotland, viz wad not so good and the water was unusually cold for August,but it was kind of nice in a ‘fully protected’ kind of way..also nice to try out my new ‘Aqua-lung Mistral’ twin hose dive regulator which works better than I had expected. Had to visit my regular dive shop today too, to take some things in for servicing,a reminder that dive kit is basically ‘life support equipment’ and needs looking after!

Worry? Well,yes I do a little…and who wouldn’t,except maybe a hardened masochist with medical fantasies? At long last,I am off to hospital this week to have some minor repairs,an oil change and a 54000 mile service. And in deference to previous postings on this topic,as the saying goes,” You got to be very careful for what you wish for..’cos you might get it!”  I’ve not been in hospital before but I am sure it will be a mix of boredom,terror,indignity,discomfort and awful food. All for the best though…

LATE NEWS! Just spent 2 days in hospital [blogged here], got psyched up for it, and just as I was about to be wheeled into the theatre my operation was cancelled due to emergency admissions.So postponed to 26/9 ,mfff.. Ta for the nice comments guys,I’ll keep them for next month!

What is it about steel plate armour? Seems it’s a fetish, like so many other things but what’s the root of it? Maybe it’s connected with hyper-masculine images from movies and picturebooks of steel covered knights in battle…Or maybe it’s the desire to be protected in steel,steel so heavy you can hardly move unless you are very strong. The sound of the joints creaking and squealing as your legs and arms move…The feel of the metal over chain mail and leather [or rubber] over your skin creating a great sensation of solidity,bulk and weight. The feeling of being invulnerable,of being able to do and take what you want,including maybe the odd fair maiden or squire! The idea of sex in full plate armour,whether possible or not sounds pretty extreme,even dangerous. Some guys have gone as far as having a suit built for themselves. Maybe they are interested in jousting or historical re-enactments or maybe the feel of two guys in armour fighting and battling against each other…the grinding of metal as two steel covered warriors fight hand to hand,body to body….Or maybe it’s for sex or solosex or just a gearhead thing,so transcends sexuality….

Yep in this and in so many other areas my mind has taken this fantasy and used it to j/o and cum to…I think for me it was the fantasy feeling of total enclosure and the weight and invulnerability of the gear. I kind of imagine being in layers of latex,then covered in chain mail,then screwed into shiny steel plate armour.

Visiting a shop in Hastings ,UK,where a craftsman made plate armour and chain mail your author was invited to try on a chain mail hood, which astonished me by the weight. It was a strange feeling. I also tried on a steel helmet though this was rather more of a fetish article than anything King Henry VIII might have worn. That was heavy enough…what must a  whole suit of plate armour be like? Could I actually stand up in it ? Would I enjoy the experience? [mmm...of course I would! ] The price of such items? Way beyond my pocket and they are slowly and expertly made up to measure. Guys sometimes take several years to get a full suit made up. I was once told that around $5000 could get you a basic suit, though this sounds a bit on the low side. Wandering around an historical armoury exhibition is always interesting,but I’m never failed to be amused by how short people here seemed to be 600 years back!

Some guys have taken this fetish to extremes such as described in the story ‘Life in Steel‘ which I suspect may have some truth behind it,incredibly enough. Anyone know anything about the steelsuit photo located at the end of that story which seems to be half way between a robot and a suit of plate armour?

Watchmen,the ‘superhero movie to end all superhero movies‘ is being made right now for a 2009 release. For those of us who loved Alan Moore’s superlative ‘Watchmen‘ story in DC comics a decade or two back, this film seems to accurately catch it’s appearance,ambiance and spirit. I can hear the groans out there from those who don’t like ‘comicbooks stuff ‘ or ‘graphic art novels’ as they might more properly be called, but hold on…this is the only ‘comicbook’ story to ever win a Hugo literary award. Time magazine listed this ‘comicbook’  as one of the top 100 literary pieces written in the last 85 years. The story is hard to summarize in a few sentences,lets just say it is a powerful story about moral choices set in an alternate [but highly recognisable] reality.The baddy[or is he the goody?] is Adrian Veidt aka ‘Ozymandias‘ ,played by Matthew Goode.(pic below)

Have a look  at the preview here. I am speechless at how good this is….Some great costumes as well. I see bodyhugging rubber is still very much de riguer in Hollywood!   The pics at the top and bottom here are film stills of my favourite character in Watchmen ,Dan Drieberg aka ‘Niteowl‘,[played by Patrick Wilson] a guy with a cellar full of gear and interesting equipment that would keep me happy for a very long time. There was a kink undertone in the story where superheroes get off in making out in costume….I wonder if this will translate to the big screen? Got to say ‘Rorschach‘ is the hero you will never forget though,with the rubber mask with a liquid crystal layer that changes shape and shade. I like superhero stuff, and I guess, so does Hollywood! These films make serious money ! The new Bats movie just broke box office records!

I enjoy using Yahoo messenger…Until I went online 3 years back for the first time,I would never have dreamed that typewritten realtime communication could be so enjoyable…Had a nice chat with Rubcovr the other day,who I like very much and is a very cool gearfreak, he organises the GearBlast events Stateside.This great image of him was taken recently in some rather unorthodox divegear…imagine meeting that 30m down!  ["D'oh! narced up again!"]

Whilst on the subject of diving, I would like to remind diverfetish fans who dive that the fourth Annual Dive Gathering is scheduled to take place in Ohio at the end of August. Sadly I will not be able to attend this year due to my forthcoming date with the ‘General Surgery Department’ at my local hospital in a few weeks.[It's nothing serious,I will be up and rubberdiving again in no time! ]

Are you part of the blogosphere? Or do you think it’s none of anybody’s business what you think? There are millions of blogs nowadays and plenty of easy sites to enable you to write stuff and add images, so everyone can have a mini presence on the web,and record numbers now do so. A while back,desperate to find fetish based gay blogs to add to this site,I asked the guys on Rubberzone. Now,they are usually an inexhaustible supply of information but this time I drew a bit of a blank. Seems people tend to link up more fetish wise using the sites than connecting through blogs. Which is a shame,cos some of them are bloody great! Apart from keeping in touch with all the latest ideas ,images and vids they also link up to many many other blogs.I have added 5 varied images here I have ‘collected’ this week from blogs,as you can see,they are good places to build up image banks as well.

Some guys are content to just add a pic or two they have found online each week or so with a pithy comment. Some write long and personal accounts of their lives and interests and what they have been getting up to. Some are not backwards with coming forwards as to their opinions. Even when I disagree I find the comments interesting although maybe irritating sometimes in a <tsk>” you-should-know-better” kind of way.

I link on my site here to about 20 blogs right now- see the WEBLOGS section right at the bottom of the far right column here. The one I like best is perhaps “Ad Schuring’s darkroom Diaries”. [Ad also runs Delftboys which is a commercial gay artwork site that I also think very highly of]. His blog is interesting and always visually stunning,but I guess we have a professional graphic designer at work here. He puts up YouTube music vids a bit too, but I got to say music rarely works well for me on blogs as it often means a blast of something raucous when you log on. Ads’ blog is sometimes serious,sometimes witty.It’s always imaginative, clever and very visual… Sometimes so good I feel intimidated by it! I like less some of his political opinions though,but it’s a free world.

The “Retired Pornstar Blog” is a nice mix of vanilla and rougher eyecandy,fetish porn artwork and plugs for an American rubber manufacturer,Slickitup, which is where the top picture of sexy Cody in latex comes from. . Mr Retired Pornstar does not write that much which is sad as I feel he probably would have a lot more interesting stuff to say. And this guy seems to blog daily! Impressive stuff!

The strangest site I link to is probably the Cumm site which is a kind of blog of a ‘retired gay sex worker who relocated to a ’south coast UK seaside town from London’ The site is very unusual in format and is a bit irritating to explore but is well worth the effort

I am also inspired by some of the blogs and maybe vice versa. the interesting ‘Sealed and Suffocating’ blog got me to write an article here about popper systems.

There are many many more and most guys link to dozens of them. I am only really just starting to explore the blogosphere…there are lots of very gay blogs,many almost stereotypical straight from ‘Tales of The City‘ but I have been surprised by the very limited number of gear and fetish based blogsites. As well as here on frglee, I blog on yahoo360 but this tends to be more personal stuff.

If you know any interesting blogs I should link to please let me know.I am all in favour of giving every publicity to interesting blogsites. In a modern world where we seem to get rather more isolated from each other,maybe blogs are the antidote.

This great picture above was recently posted on Divegear Ning,[click on it for a larger image!] I do not feel too guilty about ‘nicking’ it to here as it must be pretty old,and probably comes from some old public Canadian military source. These military divers are wearing pretty basic kit by modern standards,but I guess they are inspecting a hull so no great need for the full shebang [such as depth and tank gauges,watches,bouyancy jackets etc]

What I love about the picture apart from the three fit young military divers[and the twin hose regs] are the great old beavertail wetsuits. I remember the first time I saw suits like this on flickering 405 line black and white tv in the early 60’s and even then I knew they a hypnotic effect on me…Cousteau and his sexy young French divers parading about in the sun aboard the Calypso in their kit and swimming like rubbered eels underwater.The picture below is from one of the Cousteau books which was grade ‘A’ diverporn to me at 14 or 15…Many happy dreams were spent with these guys! I just love the texture of the suit in this photo…you can almost feel and smell the wet sharkskin neoprene in the hot sun!

The first time I got to actually see a suit like this I must have been about 10 or 11 and was in a large sports store in central London. There was a dummy kitted up in much the same gear as in the top picture and,in the warm showroom,the neoprene sharkskin wetsuit exuded a rubbery smell that could be detected within yards. I reached out and touched it slyly hoping no one would mind…I can still remember the tactile thrill or the rubber under my fingers..it was rough and knobbly,yet shiny and smooth. The aura of rubber entered my soul and from then on I could think of little else! <grin>.

We lived in a small Devon [SW England] seaside town in the late 60’s and the beach was used by divers a little bit. I can remember watching them sometimes,speechless with awe as they scrunched their bodies into the tight black wetsuits and then got the rest of their gear on before they walked into the sea leaving this excited teenage lad on the beach awaiting their return. Desperately wanting to emulate them I even tried to make my own suit out of old inner tubes I had found. I must have known it was a sexual thing and therefore secret because I hid it away from my parents. The ‘divesuit’ was found and removed,much to my sadness. I did become a great kid snorkeller though and then a diver in my twenties,a sport I still love now.
